Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, whose tribal clan name is “Madiba,” was born 18 July 1918 in Mvezo (Union of South Africa). Commonly known as the first black President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, Nelson Mandela was one of the leaders of the historic fight against the political system of apartheid.

After graduating as a lawyer, Mandela became a participant of the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944, where his objective was to fight peacefully for the political and economic equality and the abolition of the white minority domination and racial segregation led by it. When and it became obvious that nonviolent struggle was not successful, Mandela became a leader of the ANC military wing known as Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1961.

On 12 July 1963, Mandela was arrested by the Police indicated by the CIA and was sentenced to life in prison. He remains a world recognized personality, whose word is of a great influence in the domain of human rights and is considered as the father of a democratic South Africa.
