The Korean War Research Paper

As the matter of fact the Korean War (often called the forgotten war) became an actual beginning of the Cold War that had major influence on the international relations for the rest of the 20th century. It did not only change the distribution of power in the world but also had major influence on the domestic policy of the U.S. and the execution of power within the country.

One of the basic changes in the governmental policy touched upon the military budget. First of all, the war showed that the U.S. army should be strengthened and the budget was bobbled. That bobbling showed nothing but the strengthening of the positions of the military in power execution.

Another aspect touches ideological issues. The years of Truman presidency became the time of development of any communist doctrine that influenced all spheres of political and social life. As the result, the ideology became the major tool of power execution and was used in all spheres of life for many years to come. The war reflected the very beginning of the process and, to large extend determined its development.

Human rights movement

The Civil Rights Movement was at a peak from 1955-1965. Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, guaranteeing basic civil rights for all Americans, regardless of race, after nearly a decade of nonviolent protests and marches, ranging from the 1955-1956 Montgomery bus boycott to the student-led sit-ins of the 1960s to the huge March on Washington in 1963. (Cozzens, 1998)

Examining the issue more closely one is sure to come to the conclusion that the main role in the shift towards the liberalization in the field was played by the judicial branch of power. Many of the decisions were made by the Supreme Court and in fact it was the body that applied the decisions that helped further development of the movement.

During the mentioned period the legislative power was the main tool that ruled the social life actively. Lot’s of well known the new laws that made significant contribution to the desegregation were adopted by the Congress (like the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Right Act of 1965).

At the same time, President also played significant role in the process since it was he who commanded federal troops to establish order during the riots against desegregation and help to maintain order and security.

War on terrorism

The main factor that differs the war on terrorism from any of the events described above is the internal character of the problem and its extreme danger. While Korean War was the matter of confrontation of the two forces that led to many victims, it still was the war that happened somewhere else and not in the U.S. So the decisions made were not so vital and didn’t have such great influence on the internal affairs. From the other hand, Civil Right Movement being a purely internal matter still had positive meaning and lead to liberalization and unification of the society.

The issue of terrorism includes the necessity to deal with it as with the danger and at the same time consider the fact that it is the internal affair of the country. Moreover, unlike the ordinary war, terrorism is the hidden treat that makes it harder to deal with.

For this reasons the distribution of power shifts towards the president as the father and the leader of the nation. The word of president becomes more important because he becomes an image in the minds of people. No other body can become such an image since it consists of many people and even if headed by one person still can’t be associated with the entire nation.

At the same time the role of the intelligence services grows. It is connected with the vital importance of those services for the maintenance of the national security and terrorism prevention.
As the result the state executes the policy of high security and, as the result, applies some restrictions the its citizens for their own and state safety.
