Research Paper on Dwight D. Eisenhower

Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower, born October 14, 1890 in Denison, Texas, died March 28, 1969 in Washington, DC, was U.S. President from 1953 to 1961 and Supreme Commander of the Allies in Europe during World War II. Eisenhower was awarded the highest U.S. rate officer, General of the Army. He was NATO’s supreme commander from 1950 to 1952. The important events during Eisenhower’s presidency was the armistice in the Korean War, the Suez Crisis, the expansion of highways, and sustained economic growth and stability. He was the last president born in the 1800s and the first Republican to be elected to the post since before the Wall Street crash of 1929.

Eisenhower’s agenda was influenced by his decision to join the Republicans until 1952, with strength equalizing goal. Politically, he singled out as one of the most liberal Republicans. He resisted pressure from his party to cut taxes in favor of a balanced budget and some further development of the social system created by Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. Although integration issues played a prominent role on the political scene, the case Brown vs. Board of Education in 1954 led to the White House finally endorsed the idea of ??federal action to ensure universal suffrage and desegregation in the Democrat-dominated south.

After his success in World War II, General Eisenhower returned to the U.S., where he was received like a hero. Many of his supporters urged him to seek public office, although expectations waned somewhat since 1948 after his decline to replace the unpopular President Truman as Democratic presidential candidate (Truman later won re-election against Eisenhower later ally, the popular New York Governor Thomas Dewey).

Before the presidential elections in 1952, when it became clear that a Republican victory was to be expected, he accepted an offer to become a candidate and defeated isolationist and Senator Robert Taft (son of the President William Taft). Unlike Taft, Eisenhower wanted to have a strong NATO, which he saw as a guarantor against communism expansion, and accepted the Truman Doctrine and the majority of New Deal reforms.

Eisenhower said that he chose the Republicans to the Democrats as the latter had had presidential power for twenty years. He also said that the working class, as a rule, were Democrats, could vote for him because he was raised in a working class family. Eisenhower was considered to be a liberal republican and was often criticized by Dewey. In his presidential campaign, Eisenhower criticized Truman administration’s policies regarding “Korea, Communism, and Corruption.” He promised to personally ensure that the Korean War would end.

In the elections, Eisenhower won a great victory over Governor Adlai Stevenson. Eisenhower was the only professional soldier who was elected president during the 1900s.

Before Eisenhower was inaugurated as president he renounced the title as five-star General, General of the Army, due to legal difficulties with having a military rank in that capacity. When his two terms in office was over, he got back the title.
