Oswald left school at the age of 16 and on 24 October 1956 and entered the United States Navy. After taking a course on radar control, he was transferred to the naval base at Atsugi, near Tokyo. At the base Oswald had few friends, and spent most of his time reading – mostly Marxist books – and studying Russian language. Soon he began to claim that “Communism is the best system in the world.” Prior to his transfer back to the U.S. at the end of 1958, Oswald was twice jugged by the Tribunal: first, for the unauthorized possession of personal weapons, and second, after a quarrel with the sergeant. According to one of the officers, Oswald “was a little crazy about politics” and became an ardent supporter of Fidel Castro, who seized power in Cuba in January 1959.
September 11, 1959 Oswald was released from duty so that he can help his mother, which was at his expense. However, after giving her 100 dollars, he booked a ticket on a ship from New Orleans to Le Havre, France, and later continued his journey through Europe as far as Moscow. On October 31, he appeared at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow with the refusal of U.S. citizenship, saying that he was a Marxist. Then he tried to obtain Soviet citizenship, and proposed to the Soviet authorities the information he acquired while working at the naval base.
Oswald spent in the Soviet Union two and a half years, married a Russian, but living in the Marxist state was not what he expected. On 1 June 1962 Oswald, his wife Marina, and his little daughter June was allowed to leave the USSR. He never received Soviet citizenship and denied passing classified information to Russian. The U.S. State Department has given Oswald a permission to enter the U.S.
