Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle, born 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, died 7 July 1930 in Crowborough in East Sussex, was a Scottish physician and writer, best known for his books about the master detective Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. Doyle was the nephew of illustrator Richard Doyle. The name “Conan” is actually a middle name, but Doyle used it as part of the last name for almost all of his writing. He placed in encyclopedias therefore often under the letter “C”.

Doyle was a trained doctor, but earned his living as a writer. When the first Sherlock Holmes story was serialized in fledgling magazine The Strand Magazine, his readership increased tremendously. People believed that the main character was real and sent their problems to the newspaper. Some of these riddles Doyle managed to actually solve, and he was acclaimed for his genius. After the First World War, when the burden of never escape Holmes and Watson, and several family members died, became too much, he turned to spiritualism, to try to make contact with his late sons. Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born in a Catholic family of Norman original, immigrant from Ouilly-sur-Orne village. His father was Englishman Charles Altamont Doyle, and his mother was Irish, born Mary Foley, married in 1855. According to the preface to the French version of The White Company, he was also be a descendant of the Dukes of Brittany (Conans). Conan Doyle received his primary education at the preparatory school of Jesuits from Hodder Place, in the city of Hurst Green, near Clitheroe in Lancashire. At the age of nine, he enrolled in college Stonyhurst, which he left to 1875, rejecting Christianity before becoming agnostic. From 1876 to 1881 he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and performs several internships at Aston (now a district of Birmingham) and in Sheffield. While practicing medicine, he began writing news, which were first published before his twentieth year in Chambers’s Journal Edimburgh. He obtained his doctorate in 1885 with a thesis devoted to tabes, a frequent event in the era of late nerve complications of syphilis.

After graduation, he served as a doctor on a ship on a voyage to the coast ‘of West Africa. He travels the seas of the Arctic coasts of Africa. It is a patriotic work on the war in Africa for which he was knighted.
