The same fate befell the Finnish Cable Works company (founded in 1912, its main activity was production of cables). In 1967, the merger was formalized. In fact, it turned out later that the two companies have joined Nokia Ab. The new company had a lot of various activities: rubber products, cables, electronics, wood processing, and production of electric power. Little by little, Nokia Ab added a few more production lines: chemical materials and plastics production (it was secondary activities).

Since the early 1980s, Nokia has chosen electronics as the main direction of its development. At the same time, Nokia acquired a few companies producing electronics (Televa, Mobira, Luxor of Sweden, Salora). Quite quickly, the Company achieved considerable success. In the late 1980s, the world economy took a downturn. The crisis has affected Nokia too. To keep the company afloat, Nokia held a major change in the structure. It decided to stop many activities.

New technologies became the Company’s first priorities. Telecommunications division was the most developed. Rubber products business became a separate company and was named Nokian Renkaat (this happened in 1988. Currently, it is a private company).

Nokia has played a major role in the development of the GSM standard. In 1989, the Finnish operator Radiolinja buys from Nokia the equipment for GSM-networks. 1992 saw the release of the Nokia 1011 (GSM standard).

In 1994, by the finally developed Company strategy, telecommunication technologies came out on top of the Company activities.

In the summer of 2006, the Nokia Siemens Networks Company was established – Siemens and Nokia merged their telecom businesses.

In August 2009, Nokia and Microsoft joined their forces. The Companies signed a partnership agreement. The result of this union is the Microsoft Office Mobile package.
