North Korea (Korean Joseon Puk, 북조선 (Hangul), 北 朝鲜 (Hanja), officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) (Korean Joseon Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk, 조선 민주주의 인민 공화국 (Hangul) 朝鲜 民主主义人民 共和国 (Hanja)), is a state that covers the northern part of the Korean peninsula in East Asia. The capital city is Pyongyang.
It is bordered by China (1,416 km common border) in the north and Russia in the north-east (19 km border) and the Republic of Korea to the south (238 km border). The latter southern border is lined on both sides in the 2 km thick demilitarized zone (DMZ), which is actually very heavily militarized, as monitored by a total of more than one million soldiers. Japan is a sea near neighbor, is separated from North Korea by the Sea of Japan.
North Korea is a single-party state with a “united front” led by the Korean Workers’ Party (KWP).
The country’s government follows the official ideology of Juche autonomy developed by President Kim Il-sung. After his death in 1994, Kim Jong-Il, his son, succeeded him as head of state but not as President of the Republic, this function is remained “forever” attached to the person of Kim Il-sung.
After the breakup of the Soviet Union and a series of natural disasters, North Korea suffered a famine making 900,000 to two million dead. Kim Jong Il then adopted the policy of Songun or “military first” to strengthen the country and the government.
The communist regime is often called totalitarian. The term “Stalinist” is also used in the West to designate, mobilizing a personality cult around Kim Il Sung and his descendants, and one of the lowest levels of human rights respect in the world. The North Korean government denies these considerations. The scheme is also dynastic: after the death of Kim Jong-il in 2011, his youngest son Kim Jong-un is proclaimed new leader of the party and the army has not yet officially assumed the position of general secretary Workers’ Party of Korea and chairman of the Committee on National Defence previously occupied by his father.
